Quality Education Gives

Power to the People

This post sounds like my other post titled, “Who is the Government?” which had a similar angle of thought. But they are different, for this one focuses on the citizens as individuals, while the other focuses on the citizens as people. These vital questions will be treated on this post: How does quality education gives you power to stand against oppression? How does quality education gives you power to determine you own destiny?

Quality Education Gives Individuals the Right Resources to Withstand Oppression

There are many life-long skills that high quality education bestows to its receivers, like: Critical thinking, Communication skills/writing skills, work skills, among others.

Critical Thinking Skill

Critical thinking is developed substantially in a high-quality education system. Students from this system are trained to look beyond the surface of issues. This kind of training develops the inquisitiveness of the students that they often seek for the Whys of an issue.

Questions of whys reach deep into the core of issues and the answers gotten at this point can become a solution to the problem. For example, why are good number of Nigerians selling on the traffic? Why is corruption endemic in Nigeria? Why is the Nigerian Police Force oppressing and intimidating the poor citizens?

Individuals who reason critically would look at these issues and form a deeper perception of the matter beyond the level of thought of the non-critical thinkers. The non-critical-thinking individuals may see nothing wrong with Nigerians selling by the roadside or on the highway (some may call it traffic economy). These kinds of people would conclude that the market sellers are hustlers doing their business so as to provide for their daily bread, and as they do so, they should be grateful that they are making a living on the traffic. As some do not have such opportunity to earn a living and make ends meet.

However, a deep critical thinker will see the situation and ask why are Nigerians, especially youths, engage in such mode of trade? Is such method of earning a living the best use of time and talent for these Nigerians? Are there solutions that can help these individuals engage in their trade in a more comfortable and dignified manner?

You noticed that the second deeper thoughts on the issue explore on solution methods. Entrepreneurs can see opportunities in this situation create business solutions to engage the road-side sellers. Same critical thinking applies to the issues of government oppression or police brutality.

The non-critical thinkers may see little or no wrong in the manner the Nigerian Police apply intensive force as they go about their duty or the subtle way they extort money from drivers. They conclude that it is how the police officers do and that where someone works is where the eats (work-chop in local parlance). But critical thinkers will instantly see system decay and clamour for reforms to rectify the structural deform.

Just like the case of George Floyd who was pinned to death by the Minneapolis Police Officer. Critical thinkers have seen the level of police decay that led to such act and they have been on the street protesting and demanding for legislative reforms to permanently address the underlying decay.

Only systemic quality education develops critical thinking on individuals. Same quality education gives skills of writing and communication to individuals so as to defend themselves when oppressed.

Writing Skills

Writing is a mode of communication where any individual who master this skill is powerful indeed. The person can successfully communicate with a third of the world’s population Population of qualitatively trained individuals armed with this skill have strong advantage over seemingly oppress situation. They will write on issues they face and proffer solutions to them through writing. Writing skill go in-hand with critical thinking skill and both are products of high-quality education which gives enormous power to individuals who have been well-trained academically.

Work Skills

Quality education gives individuals the power to determine their destiny. Critical thinking skill and writing skill are key power tools that high quality education bestows to its receivers. These skills can help individuals to rule their world. People with these skills can master any field of knowledge they are interested in.

As quality education provides access for individuals to learn other skills, individuals can equip themselves with skills and knowledge on the area of study they like and use what they learn to help themselves. Visionary individuals can apply such skills and knowledge to create astonishing solutions like; Thomas Edison, Elon Musk, Albert Einstein, etc.

Indeed, quality education gives power to the people by providing them with skills and knowledge to respond appropriately when oppressed. Individuals can reach any dream and aspiration they have with the help of skills and knowledge high-quality education system bestows to them.
